Johan Bosch van Rosenthal (*1963) has more than twenty five years of experience in the international art market, and founded ART CONSULT as an independent art advisory in 1999.
After working with art dealers in The Netherlands, England and Germany, he joined Christie’s in Amsterdam in 1986 as a specialist for Old Master Pictures, Drawings and Prints. Here he was a specialist for Old Master Paintings and Drawings, as well as for Old Master, Modern and Contemporary Prints. He was specifically responsible for the annual sale of Dutch and Flemish Old Master Drawings, a field in which he has published several articles. He was also a specialist responsible for the bi-annual sales of Old Master Paintings. As Head Auctioneer he became familiar with all aspects of an auction. In 1999 he decided to leave Christie’s and set up his own company, ART CONSULT, as an independent art advisory.
Johan Bosch van Rosenthal is a sworn and certified valuer and a board member at the Dutch association of valuers, brokers and auctioneers TMV (www.federatie-tmv.nl). As a valuer, he has been asked to do valuations for different purposes on behalf of a number of international museums and institutions, including the Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam; Teylers Museum, Haarlem; The Fogg Art Museum, Harvard University, Cambridge MA; The Art Gallery of Ontario, Toronto and others.
Johan is Curator of Museum het Zwanenbroedershuis, ’s-Hertogenbosch (NL) which houses the collection of one of the eldest Brotherhoods of The Netherlands, Illustre Lieve Vrouwe Broederschap, founded in 1318 (www.zwanenbroedershuis.nl).
He is the author of a number of art historical publications, mostly on Dutch 17th Century art.
Upon founding ART CONSULT Johan had a weekly column about the art market on Dutch radio for three years, followed by a monthly column in the dutch newspaper Het Financieele Dagblad. This culminated in the publication of his book Onschatbare Waarde about the art market which was published by the newspaper in the fall of 2004.
Johan’s philosophy for ART CONSULT is to act as an independent advisor to buyers and sellers in the art market, while the company’s income remains transparant at all times.
